Description: Lake Erie Maps & Prints An Authentic Antique Print: Not a Modern Reproduction! We Glady Combine Multiple Items to Save Shipping Fees Description: It is an authentic antique copper engraved print approximately 236 years old from Pierre Bonnaterre's Tableau Encyclopedique et Methodique des Trois Regnes de la Nature, vol. 7, Icthyologie, published by Panckoucke, Paris, 1788, a copy of the title page is included, see the pic of the title page. Not a Modern Reprint. It is being sold as a single sheet, not mounted, matted, nor framed.Abbé Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre (1752-1804), French Zoologist who contributed to the cataloging of over 400 species of Fish and the identification of 25 new species in his encyclopedia was not limited to Fish, but other zoological branches including sections on mammals, birds, reptiles, snakes, amphibians and insects. In the bottom left is a reference to Robert Benard (or Jacques Renaud Benard), who supplied many of the plates for Diderot's Encyclopedie in 1751. Panchkoucke the publisher reused versions of many of these plates to illustrate Bonnaterre'sTableau Encyclopedique et Methodique. Thus "Benard Direxit" in the bottom margin indicates that the plates were directed by him in his atelier of engravers. In later works, many of these fish images, often slightly modified, also ended up in Buffon's and his collabrator Lacepede's encylopedic works as well, adding to the confusion. Sometimes they are listed as Benard prints, Panckoucke prints, and Bonnaterre prints, which we are listing them here for simplistic reasons, since he was the author of the Encyclopedique et Methodique from which they came. Size: The image area measures 6 1/4 by 9 inches (16x23cm) on a 9x12" page (23x32cm) Condition: The print is in Good to Very Good condition for its age, blank on the reverse, printed on a heavy cotton page with deckled edges, typical of antique paper of the era. There are a few very light spots and a bend on the bottom left corner and wear on the deckled edge, although the paper is very strong and not brittle, plenty of margin for framing. Overall, fairly clean with a strong impressions on a bright page that would frame up well with an antique appearance. See the pics for more on condition. The pics are of the actual print.Shipping: We are always glad to combine items into one shipment, which ebay does automatically when you purchase multiple items through the ebay cart systems, you will only be charged one shipping fee and free US shipping on 5 or more items, International rates apply elsewhere.
