Description: Up for sale is a very early and rare edition of Jules Verne’s adventure novel, 800 LEAGUES ON THE AMAZON , published by John W. Lovell Company in New York. No date, but bibliographies list this edition as published in 1882, one year after the first. Probably a pirated edition. The work was issued by Lovell originally in two parts in printed wrappers, Part I titled “The Giant Raft,” and Part II titled “The Cryptogram.” The publishers chose to title the work on the front cover as “800 Leagues on the Amazon / Cryptogram” as if they were two separate works, which they are not. Both parts are bound together, but separately paginated, in this one hardcover edition, bound in green cloth with ornate decoration and detailing. Numbers on spine are “34” and “XXXV” which is curious, as “The Giant Raft,” was #34 in Lovell’s Library and “The Cryptogram” was issued as #35. Not sure why the two different styles of number, or the odd titling, but we’ll chalk it up to it being from a reprint publisher. A rare edition, despite not being the first, because it was issued so soon after the first American and first British editions. Hinges are tender, but holding well, all endpapers intact, and overall book in GOOD PLUS condition. Remnants of some old paper on spine, but this can be chipped off easily with a bit more effort. A nice addition to any Verne or science fiction library. See photos, sold as-is.
