Description: Immigration, by Rev M. W. Montgomery, 1889 Immigration. Montgomery, Rev. M. W. New York: The American Home Missionary Society, 1889. Softcover wraps, 6x9 inches, 13 pages. Referring to the prevailing outcry against immigration in the United States in the late 1800s, the author suggests that this is largely exaggerated and not supported by the facts. Unjust prejudices are aroused against foreigners merely as foreigners, without regard to character. Needless offense is given to our foreign-born citizens and their children, tending to weaken the roots of their growing patriotism. Montgomery suggests a strategy for allowing immigration based on character rather than nationality; however, his idea of character seems to also be highly prejudiced, considering those from Italy, Russia, Poland and Bohemia undesirable while generally those from Northern Europe desirable. Very good condition, with small stain and tiny hole to bottom right corner of cover and pages, light toning.
