1950 Exchange Bank @ 5 pts South Birmingham Alabama & Commuter Car Cards Sign

Description: For auction is a vintage early 1950’s double sided metal advertising sign, both companies being advertised were in the Birmingham Alabama area. This non magnetic metal sign, likely made of heavy gauge aluminum, measures approximately 14”x 44” as pictured. One side reads: The Friendly Exchange Bank at 5 points. This was basically a bank where one could purchase, swap or trade in foreign currencies. Side two reads: It’s Easy to sell commuters with Car Cards. It was basically advertising for a new at the time concept of selling vehicles by means of photographing cars and putting it on a baseball card sized Card in hopes that the public would see these cards with the same enthusiasm and high regard as people did with normal baseball card trading back in the mid century. This concept obviously did not catch on and was short lived to the best of my knowledge. This sign was originally mounted on the side of Birmingham Transit buses. Some were single sided and others double, this is obviously a double side. Each side was advertised in one month increments. They were then removed and discarded. Some of the luckier bus drivers were allowed to bring one home every now and then. The gentleman driver who brought this one home along with others worked there from the late 1940’s to the late 1950’s. Unfortunately to the best of my knowledge this is the last one. It shows moderate to heavy signs of use, age and wear including minor dings and scratches. It has some paint loss, one side more than the other. It still has decent graphics, very hard to find in any condition. Overall reasonably good vintage condition old all original sign!
