Description: .ALLENTOWN,PA MACK TRUCK VTG Real Photo SUPPLEE ICE CREAM Sealtest LOGO Moulthrop First some history....Generally speaking, the period of 1890 to the end of the 1930s saw a gradual westward realignment whereby cheese and butter manufacture began to dwindle in the immediate Philadelphia area and these products were produced further west and shipped into the city. This outward migration was followed by cream, and then to a lesser degree, milk. By 1903 milk was coming from as far as 200 miles outside the city. By the 1920s the majority of the city's milk was coming from counties between 50 and 60 miles from the city, but some hauls were over 400 miles as the crow flies. In 1922 almost 750,000 gallons of milk came from more than 440 miles from the city (sounds like a lot, but that was only 1.5% of the city’s total milk that year), and cream came from even further (Wisconsin, Minnesota). Milk dealers in a given urban area frequently merged with each other to form larger companies. Some became regional, but there were rather few players on a national scale before the 1920s. That decade marked an acceleration in consolidation in the dairy industry. Several large firms began to take over local and regional operators. Philadelphia’s Supplee-Wills-Jones dairy company was taken over in November 1925 by the National Dairy Products Co (NDP). NDP was created specifically to buy up other dairy firms and bring them under a single corporate umbrella. Hundreds of dairy firms small to large throughout the US were taken over by NDP in the 1920s and 30s including some familiar names like Hydrox, Breyer’s, Sheffield Farms, and Kraft-Phenix Cheese. By 1928 NDP had overtaken Bordens to be the largest dairy company in the country. By 1934 NDP was thought to be the largest dairy company in the world. Eventually National Dairy Products became Kraft Foods and in 2015 merged with H.J. Heinz to become today's Kraft Heinz. When NDP took over a local company, they would often place their “Sealtest" marking on the old brand like a guarantee or certification of quality. The product itself remained the same but now came, essentially, with a Sealtest seal of approval. Depending on the strength of a local brand, there was frequently a transition period during which local brand names were gradually subsumed by Sealtest branding. In the case of Supplee, with its strong name recognition, this took quite a while (comparatively). At first the Supplee-Wills-Jones name was shortened to just Supplee. Then an oval Sealtest logo appeared in conjunction with the Supplee name. In the 1940s the Sealtest branding began to grow in ever larger in size and Supplee became less prominent. Later (1950s?) markings showed Sealtest prominently with only a small mention of Supplee. Often it could be found in the small print as “Sealtest - Supplee Division” before eventually the Supplee name was dropped entirely. As some here likely know, at least one of the Supplee milk tank cars had a Sealtest Milk logo applied, partially obscuring the Supplee name. About this listing...
