This book was published in 1915, and although it is primarily text-based, it would make a great addition to a collection. I am also listing another book by Sazaburo Takano. Please check it out if you're interested. Sasaburo Takano (1862–1950) Sasaburo Takano was a prominent leader during the establishment of modern kendo. He was born into an old family in Omiya Village, Chichibu County, Musashi Province (present-day Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture). From a young age, he studied the Ono-ha Itto-ryu under his grandfather, Mitsumasa. At the age of six, he performed 56 kumitachi (paired sword forms) with his grandfather in front of the domain lord, Matsudaira Shimousa-no-kami, during a patrol, and was awarded the title of "prodigy" along with a gift of silver. At the age of 18, Takano moved to Tokyo and became a disciple of Yamaoka Tesshu. In 1886, he was recommended by Tesshu to become an assistant instructor of swordsmanship at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, but after the death of his master, he resigned after a little over two years and returned to his hometown. He was later appointed a martial arts instructor for the Saitama Prefectural Police, where he built the first branch of the Meishinkan dojo in Urawa. With the support of prominent local families such as Senzo Hoshino, Takano established more branches, dedicating himself to the spread of kendo while fulfilling his official duties. In 1895, when the Dai Nippon Butokukai was established in Kyoto, Takano quickly affiliated the Meishinkan dojo with the organization. The following year, he attended the second Butokusai (martial arts festival), where he was selected as a judge for the large martial arts demonstration and was awarded the "Seiren-sho" (Certificate of Refinement). When the Dai Nippon Taiiku-kai (Great Japan Sports Association) was founded, Takano was appointed as a Saitama Prefectural Commissioner in 1898. In 1899, with the support of Senzo Hiranuma, he established the 42nd branch of the Tokyo Meishinkan at Kudanshita in Tokyo, hanging the signboard of the Dai Nippon Budo Research Institute. In 1908, as a proposal to include martial arts in the physical education curriculum of secondary schools passed the House of Representatives, there was an urgent need to train teachers. Takano was invited to become a swordsmanship instructor at Tokyo Higher Normal School. In 1912, he was appointed as one of the five chief members of the committee to establish the Kendo Kata of the Dai Nippon Butokukai. The following year, he was awarded the title of kendo hanshi (master teacher) by the Butokukai. In 1915, he published the renowned work "Kendo" and in 1916 was promoted to professor, along with judoka Hideo Nagaoka. Takano held this position for over 30 years, until he voluntarily retired in 1936 at the age of 75, remaining a leading figure in the kendo world. During this time, Takano also served as a judge in major events such as the Showa Tenran-jiai (martial arts demonstrations for the Emperor) and ran a private school, Shudo Academy, where he trained many prominent swordsmen. He passed away at the age of 89 due to old age. Unlike other Japanese sellers,I have this item in stock. So I can post 24 photos. Please do bid with confidence.
