Description: Old Arthur Beckwith Watercolor Painting Description and Item Information Up for sale is this antique, framed watercolor painting by the listed artist Arthur Beckwith. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This landscape painting depicts a hillside with trees. The painting is matted and framed under what appears to be anti-glare glass. The frame is wood with a pattern of leaves and fine ribbing. The mat is beige with a faint striped and mottled appearance. The sight area within the mat measures approximately 12 5/8 inches by 9 5/8 inches. The exterior frame dimensions are approximately 21 7/16 inches by 17 3/8 inches. Unpacked, this item weighs approximately 4 pounds 1 ounce. This would make a serene addition to a collection of antique fine art. Identification This painting is by the listed artist, Arthur Beckwith. The exact age of this painting is not known. As found, a previous owner affixed biographical information about the artist on the back side. Per askART, there may be confusion regarding the exact identity of the artist. Per the askART biography written by Edan Hughes, Arthur Beckwith (1860-1930), the son of noted watercolor painter Benjamin Beckwith, was born in London, England. He studied art with his father and he attended South Kensington School in London before relocating to San Francisco in 1884. Beckwith created a large body of work over a period of two decades, but most of it was destroyed during the 1906 San Francisco fire. He stopped painting for several years after the disaster, since he was despondent about his loss. Later, Beckwith settled in Greenbrae, and he commuted by ferry to his San Francisco studio. His work includes still lifes, landscapes, and marine scenes. Beckwith was a member of the Bohemian Club, the Sequoia Club, the Marin County Art Association, and the San Francisco Art Association. He exhibited at Kanst Gallery in Los Angeles during 1915. His works are held by the De Young Museum, the Bohemian Club, and the Sequoia Club, all of San Francisco. Condition This piece looks very good overall, as shown. I have not examined the artwork outside of the frame, since it was already nicely framed when I acquired it. The frame has light wear, with some minor, scattered dings and touch-ups. There may be a few faint spots on the mat, but it is difficult to tell since it is supposed to be mottled. The back side is as shown. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying. Terms of Sale 1. Payments Taxes may be applicable.
