Antique FRANCESCO PIRANESI 'Tombstones of Gens Cornelia BURIAL CHAMBER' Etching

Description: ORIGINAL c1779 'LAPIDI INSIGNI DELLA GENTE CORNELIA TRAVETE NELLI IPOTEO DEGLI SCIPIONI (Tombstones of the gens Cornelia in the burial chamber of the gens Scipio)' FRANCISCO PIRANESI (1758-1810) ETCHING FROM TAVOLA 5 from "MONUMENTI DEGLI SCIPIONI (MONUMENTS OF THE SCIPIOS)'This is a wonderful original. This piece has been in my personal collection for quite a few years. I acquired it as part of a collection of old master engravings that I have sold in piece meal over the years. I have held onto this one because I have never seen another example come to the market. Other works from these volumes have come to market but I have not seen this one. I have found a couple examples of this print in museums including the Met, and a German museum I cant recall. If you search the print you can see a couple images around the internet. One of the entries, says this was occasionally entered into the 5th Volume (as it is notated in the upper right in the print) but I am guessing this is why this print is so scarce. Sheet measures 12 5/8 x 18 1/8 inches and as you can see it is trimmed to edge sides and top with just a small margin. Bottom has margin with title and artist information lower left. A rich impression but there are a few issues. First there is a tear in the top that extends down into the second tombstone. Another small tear upper right that extends into the background. There is a small thumbnail sized hole in the third tombstone in the top row. Other than that it is shows a layer of minor soiling as well as some spotting and a couple other edge tears and bumps. Print is attached at three of the four corners to an archival piece of paper to help stabilize and fill in the hole. Easily removable from that if you desired to clean and restore, Really an incredible scarce original museum quality engraving. I cannot find another example ever to have come to market.
