Description: Antique Painted Stoneware Apple Form Still Coin Bank Horizontal Coin Slot For your Antique Redware or Coin Still Banks Collection-AppleBankStone1 Details Description: An antique painted stoneware still coin bank. The bank is shaped as an apple and is painted in light greenish yellow and red colors. The surface of the bank is smooth to mimic the surface of an apple. The bank has an apple shape with a flattened bottom, having a recessed center with a small hole in the center, on which it can stand. It does have a horizontal coin slot at the top and a short stem in the center of the top of the apple. Red and Greenish yellow in color the bank has a few spots where the color is scratched off. The piece also has a few stains and several spots where the surface is uneven and shows crevasses that are original to the making as you would expect from an antique primitive piece of pottery. Examination of the surface reveal the presence of a few minor surface chips to the color. Other than that, the bank is in very good condition with some scratches, minor loss of color, and general soiling. Again, the bottom of the piece has a hole, which is original to ensure that the piece does not explode during the firing. A very nice antique in very good condition, which would display very nicely in your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: Unknown, but we believe it was made sometime in 1880. Origin: Purchased at an antique auction in southeastern Pennsylvania. Size: Measures ~3 1/2" in diameter and is ~3 3/8" high. The bank weighs ~11.5 ounces. Maker: Unknown. Marks: Unmarked. Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a great antique with very interesting shape, subject, and coloring. Definitely deserves a prominent spot in your antique redware collection. Condition: Bank is in very good condition. It has general soiling and displays a few spots where the color is scratched off or has chipped off, but these are small and minimum in number. The bank also has some scratches to the surface, loss of color, and general soiling. The bottom of the bank has a hole, which is original to the making put in to ensure that the piece does not explode during the firing. The bank has no breaks, hairlines, or repairs that we could find. However, the piece has some of the usual issues associated with old piece of primitive pottery such as pops, slubs, uneven surfaces (the piece has quite a few of those), areas where the coloring or the glaze did not fully flow, and areas of general roughness. Be that as it may, this is a great piece in good condition despite being an old toy. Please see photos for additional condition information.
