ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Beautiful & Extremely Rare Antique 1919 Halftone Lithograph of Historic WWI World Military Battle Scenes titled, “In Memory of the Worlds War” (AKA “World’s War”). The artist-illustrator is unknown. The publisher copyright & name, ‘© The World’s Art Publishing Co.’, appears printed lower left below the image in the outer grey-printed margin area. The scene largely depicts an American WWI Battle Scene (Center, depicting soldiers ‘Going over the Top’) along with eight other vignette war & battle scenes with various ‘Entente Alliance, Principal Allied Powers & Allied Powers’ (if I’m correct) along with their respective national flags (6 in larger circles surrounding, 2 open-blended scenes lower left & right respectively) and from lower left appear as; The United States, Romania, Italy, Belgium, Great Britain, France, Russia, Japan and Serbia. The title appears printed lower middle in the outer margin area along with the title in two other languages, ‘En commémoration de la guerre des nationes’ (French) and ‘In memoria della guerra delle nazioni’ (Italian), which appear printed lower left & right respectively. The title also appears in French & Italian on either side of the English title. The World’s Art Publishing Co., NY, published this litho on February 21, 1919 and the inventory number was ‘129413’. This particular litho utilized 18 different colors in the printing process and the evidently short-lived World’s Art Pub. Co., New York & Philadelphia, even advertised a special campaign to get agents to sell this particular print just after WWI had ended, stating in an old newspaper ad from the The Philadelphia Inquirer, from May, 1919, which read, “Agents—Wanted, soldiers, sailors, marines preferred, to sell World’s War picture in 18 colors, site 21-1/2 x 34-1/4; very good seller; 100 percent profit; sells on site; call all day Monday. World’s Art Publishing Company, 1206 Master Street. See Mr. Waroshill.” The Litho is printed on a cream-colored wove paper stock which was drymounted a long time ago to a thin stiff piece of mounting cardboard board and was previously framed for a time (outer margins were trimmed back a little), but is now loose and no frame is included. Size & Condition: the size with wide margins is 18-3/4” x 31-9/16”, Image size with light grey border is 15-1/2” x 29”. The Litho is in VeryGood Rare+ condition for its vintage age with no real color fade at all! We had a duplicate of this litho at one time that had sold, and the colors were basically identical, and though it is drymounted down, it still presents beautifully—great action-packed military illustration. This Litho has been in one of our archive drawers amongst other lithos & prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time. No Tears. Extremely minimal & slight small creases here & there on the sheet which are only lightly visible here & there in the outer margin areas, and tiny dog-ear creasing in the outer margin corners, which aren’t really worth mentioning. Minimal slight outer margin edge-wear with a few dents & dings here & there. Slight normal toning of the stock from age with a little more around the outer margin edges—all outer margin & edge issues can easily be matted & framed out. Extremely minimal (only a handful or so) of slight tiny & faint foxing specks dotted here & there which are only barely visible in the in the outer margin areas (also negligible). There is some more-pronounced foxing spots on the back of the stiff cardboard mount, not affecting or showing through to the mounted Litho. There are a few spots along the outer edges where the Litho is slightly becoming detached from the backing stock in spots. Minimal & slight topical soiling (very very lightly grubby spots) from age and from being in a drawer this whole time amongst other prints, which is only lightly noticeable here & there in the outer margin areas. Minimal slight curl of the mounted Litho at the left & right from age and being mounted (will flatted perfectly when framed-up and behind UV Conservation Glass). This will look beautiful all framed-up, and would make the perfect addition to any WWI, U.S. Military History, or World’s War History art collection.
