Guest Editor: I, Harald Leuba, am listing this map on eBay with the permission of the eBay account holder, my wife of 56 years, Nancy Kingsbury, aka "Showjudge". She is worried about how to find homes for our "stuff" when I die -- > if I die before her. We have enjoyed living with this map in our collection, but as I age, (I am now 86), I feel that I ought to protect IT from becoming lost in some 2nd hand store and, more importantly, I need to protect Nancy from having to cope with how to harvest its reasonable value in a time of personal stress. [In other words: We are downsizing!] ...... I bought this map from John Faupel, Antique Atlas, East Grinstead, UK some 20 years ago. It was his # 24 in catalog 110. I have misplaced John's catalog. However: (a) John titled it: LAFITAU, J F “Mappe-Monde pour servir a l'histoire des Decouvertes et Conquetes des Portugais dans le Nouveau Monde” 1733 And (b) If I put Mappe-Monde pour servir a l'histoire des Decouvertes et Conquetes des Portugais dans le Nouveau Monde [without quote marks] Into Google:I get 395,000 hits. The first one (in fact the first three) are THIS map:In the National Library of Australia: TROVE: “Mappe-Monde pour servir a l'histoire des Decouvertes et Conquetes des Portugais dans le Nouveau Monde” Translated to:“World map to serve the history of the discoveries and conquests of the Portuguese in the new world”“Creator Lafitau, Joseph Francois, 1881-1746“Created/Published In Paris: Chez Saugrain pere … Jean Baptiste Coignard fils …1733“Extent 24 x 45.4 cm Mappe-Monde pour servir a l'histoire des Decouvertes et Conquetes des Portugais dans le Nouveau Monde” Oval world map showing some of the tracks of early Portuguese voyagers. Relief shown pictorially. On map, title appears as "Mappe = Monde." From: Histoire des decouvertes et conquestes des Portugais dans le nouveau monde : avec des figures en taille-douce / par le R.P. Joseph Francois Lafitau de la Compagnie de Jesus. A Paris : Chez Saugrain pere ... Jean-Baptiste Coignard fils ... , 1733. …..You will note, from my screen shot of the map in the Australian Library, [See Photo # 6] that BOTH their map and ours have the lower right hand corner “cut back” when the (then folded) map was removed from the Atlas. My Comment: Having verified the identity of the map we are seeking a home for, let us move on to Fair Market Value: Our map’s surface is lovely and bright and clean; no stains or stray marks. No tears or cuts, or thin spots. The paper is lightly foxed on the folds – giving the map the “gray haired” dignity it has earned after 289 years! Our map lies flat. Our map has a margin trim at the lower right corner, when it was separated from its Atlas. We have cared for this map by holding it flat in an Archive Binder with Acid free Plastic sleeves. If you are interested enough in maps to be considering buying an Original, you know that the plates for antique maps were often reused/reprinted/recycled/revised and that there are many different (related) versions available today. You will also know that maps were not usually stand-alone images. They appeared in bibles, histories, and even (as here) in atlases! There may be are other “versions” of this map, but I cannot find any originals for sale! If you just want the “image” to frame and enjoy: buy a reprint. If you like the idea of a “genuine antique map”, think about your choices. You can wait for one to turn up or you can Buy ours.…Last month, Barry Ruderman came to our house to look at our maps with a view to his acquiring the whole collection. He was warmly professional and lived up to his reputation for expertise. He said that our maps had been well cared for and were in unusually good condition. I am listing this map at 10% less than Barry’s estimated value. You CAN get my original good condition copy now! Buy it Now or make an offer. .....Please help us find a new home for this treasure. Thank you for looking. Harald & Nancy P.S. Inflation? NO! When I bought my first map, there was silver in our US coinage. When I was in college, I could buy a gallon of gas for a silver quarter and mail a letter home for 4ç. I can STILL buy a gallon gas for the value of that silver quarter, but postage is now 60ç. Antique maps have doubled in price in the last ten years. Are they a store of value? I think so, but whether they are or not, they can be a permanent source of pleasure. P.P.S We are using the proceeds of this sale, not to add “dollars” to our bank account, but to support local charities (to help neighbors who have lost income due to Covid)!I hope you are pleased with your purchase and have warm feelings about helping others.
