Several locations in Shuqualak, including much of the downtown area, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A post office was established in Shuqualak in 1855, and the town was officially incorporated in 1859. It became a stop along the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, which was constructed in the 1850s. The name "Shuqualak" comes from the Choctaw language and is believed to mean "beads."
