He grew up playing baseball and was scouted by the Chicago Cubs while in high school. Williams made his Major League debut with the Cubs and quickly established himself as a star player, winning the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1961. He spent the majority of his career with the Cubs, playing for them from 1959 to 1974, and was a six-time All-Star and a two-time NL batting champion during his time with the team. Williams was known for his consistency at the plate and his powerful swing, which earned him the nickname “Sweet Swingin' Billy Williams”. He finished his career with 2,711 hits, 426 home runs, and a lifetime batting average of .290. In recognition of his outstanding career, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987. Today, Williams is considered one of the greatest players in Chicago Cubs history and remains a beloved figure in the sport of baseball.On the Issue - The first Baseball Hall of Fame postcards were issued beginning in 1939.
