Columbian Centinel Federalist Newspaper, Nov. 26 & April 24 1794, Thm Paine

Description: This lot features two pre-1800 Columbian Centinel Federalist newspapers published in Massachusetts. The newspaper is a fascinating glimpse into the political and cultural climate of the United States in the late 1700's and 1800s. Included are news of the day reports, local and national political news and commentary, international news, and ads and public notices, so many of which are very interesting. This newspaper features two articles by Thomas Paine and is a great addition to any collection of historical documents or memorabilia. These newspapers and 4 others I have listed separately, provide an excellent opportunity to own a piece of American history. The Columbian Centinel (1790–1840) was a Boston, Massachusetts, newspaper established by Benjamin Russell. It continued its predecessor, the Massachusetts Centinel and the Republican Journal, which Russell and partner William Warden had first issued on March 24, 1784.[1] The paper was "the most influential and enterprising paper in Massachusetts after the Revolution."[2] In the Federalist Era it was aligned with Federalist sentiment. Until c. 1800 its circulation was the largest in Boston, and its closest competitor was the anti-Federalist Independent Chronicle ("the compliments that were frequently exchanged by these journalistic adversaries were more forcible than polite").[3]Publisher Benjamin Russell "can be justly characterized as the Horace Greeley of his time. The newspapers are all 4 pages, half folded and measure approximately 23" x 19" . Original, complete and intact. The newspapers have the normal aging issues and usual wear for newspapers of that age. The two issues for sale are with references to Thomas Paine are: April 24,1794 and Nov. 26, 1794 The Nov. 26, 1794 issue features an interesting article on Thomas Paine's book, "The Age of Reason". 'The Age of Reason" is a thought-provoking book that challenges traditional religious beliefs. It encourages critical thinking and rationality, providing a compelling argument for the use of reason in matters of faith.features an article on Thomas Paine's reasons for preserving the "LIfe of Louis Capet". Louis Capet was the King of France. After voting unanimously to find the King guilty, the deputies held a separate vote on his punishment. By a single vote, Louis was sentenced to death, "within twenty–four hours." Thus, on 21 January 1793, Louis Capet, formerly King of France was beheaded by the guillotine. The lead article features an Act of Law introduced at the Second Session of Congress in Philadelphia. Approved by President George Washington and entered into record by Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, both of whose names appear in the article. Other issues available in a separate listing are: Oct. 16, 1790 Sept. 6, 1794 Aug. 12, 1795 Aug 15, 1795 Shipped free priority mail. Available for local pickup as well. Can combine shipping if multiple issues are desired. Happy to answer any questions.
