Description: Both sets available at one great price for the homeschooler or for holiday gift giving! This listing in a combined offer--sets will not be sold separately at this time. The 54-volume set of Great Books of the Western World is a series originally published in the United States in 1952, by Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc. This set is in excellent condition. The 10-volume set of The Great Ideas Program is a guide to the key ideas and readings within the Great Books of the Western World published in 1959. This set is in good condition with slightly worn covers. The editorial criteria for including a title in the Great Books series was based on three points. First, the text needed to be relevant to contemporary matters (in 1952). Second, it needed to be "rewarding" to re-read repeatedly with respect to liberal education, and third, it needed to be a part of the great mid-century conversation about "great ideas" based on at least 25 of the 102 subjects the editors had developed. The books were chosen not on the basis of ethnic and cultural inclusiveness (historical influence being seen as sufficient for inclusion), nor on whether the editors agreed with the authors' views. As a result, the selections and discussions are a snapshot of academic America at the time and may not completely reflect current discourse. The full 54-volume set weighs 91 lb. The 10-volume set weighs 12.5 lbs. The books will be shipped in several boxes. The cost of USPS Media Mail shipping is included in the sale price. Continental US shipping only. City Books (Pittsburgh) is selling these sets on consignment for a customer. As a result, shipping and handling time may be longer than three days. We will keep the buyer updated with transfer details. Additional photos are available on request.
