Its aimed particularly at girls but will be enjoyed by all young readers who are fascinated by the world of magic. Written with humour and simplicity, the story is well paced. It opens with an intriguing glimpse at Miss Stregas strange shop, hidden in the shadows. All manner of peculiar and ancient objects litter the shop window, sending most children hurrying away. But on October 31st - Jessicas tenth birthday - she is virtually blown into the shop. To her astonishment, Miss Strega has a broom waiting for her and knows that this is her birthday. In fact she knows more about Jessica than the girl herself. For Jessica is a witch and about to experience her first flying lesson. She must learn all the intricate workings of the magical broom before progressing to the finer points, such as moon-vaulting and star-falling, and contending with the many hazards of the air - like goblins and joy-riding dragons. With the valiant Miss Strega at her side, Jessica learns to harness the brooms power while enjoying many adventures. For any child who has longed to fly (and who hasnt?) there is all the exhilaration of journeying through the air, coupled with exciting adventures far above the ground. Packed with fast-moving action and humour, this is an entertaining read that children will love.
