Description: Auction description France 1790: Peasants and Roman Ruins in the Campana, Large Sweeping Engraving, Listed Artists This large and beautiful engraving from the late 18th century shows a view from the Campana, the countryside around Rome, with a peasants on the left driving their donkeys throught a ruined Roman fortification, and a more village in the distance. The style evokes at once eighteenth century neo-classicism and a nascent Romantic sensibility. According to information on the plate, it's based on a painting by German artist Christian Dietricy (1712-1744), engraved by the distinguished printmaker Robert Daudet II (1737-1824). Note that in Daudet's biographical entry in the Bénézit "Dictionnaire" this very picture is listed among his outstanding works. It is a fine achievement. Dimensions of the engraving (cropped margins, trimmed to the image) are about 12.75 inches by 15 inches laid down on larger backing paper. Condition of this nice, sharp impression is good with some toning. There is a ver small paper blemish in the sky area. The picture with its generous dimensions makes a strong impression, and you are drawn into the scene. A 2011 auction hammer price for this excellent engraving is $100 (one of a pair). Another, from 1997, is $300 (one of a pair). To tempt you with this exemplar,, I am starting it out really low. Shipping cost within the U.S. for this large work swill be $14.
