The rescue divers were awarded the only Congressional Medals of Honor in the time between the two World Wars. During World War II, the helmet was firmly established as the standard diving rig for nearly all training, heavy salvage and repair work. With its well earned reputation for being virtually indestructible, reliable and simplistic in design, this helmet was used for over 60 years in the military and continues to be used by civilian divers to this day. G.I. Joe took his first deep sea dive in 1965 when the G.I. Joe Action Sailor set included full diving suit and working equipment to transform into a U.S. Navy Deep Sea Diver.
