Description: Greek Hellenistic Period Tetradrachm, 300s B.C., Alexander the Great early posthumous issue by Seleucus I, NGC authenticated / graded / encapsulated as Very Fine. This is a superb specimen, that likely just missed EF, especially as can be seen with its many sharp details on the reverse. This coin represents a key era of Eurasian history. Alexander the Great died in 323 B.C. returning from campaign while still young, after conquering the largest empire of countless diverse peoples up to that time. His generals and other notables divided the European Greek and Asian lands among themselves - but not without warfare. This specimen was minted under the authority of Seleucus the First, former Macedonian general to Alexander, probably somewhere in western Asia, as he lastly strove to seize control of the "home" Macedonian Greek Kingdom, but was killed shortly after arriving there. All glory is fleeting... The obverse depicts Heracles, or Hercules in Latin and the modern West, in these large silver coins of 4 drachmae, or 4 drachms, or 4 drachmas, across the centuries after the Greek classical times. The diecutters certainly changed over so many years and different mints all over Alexander's former huge empire, but you can tell Heracles by the lion pelt hoodie he is shown wearing. The reverse shows a seated Zeus, usually, and other details which vary, including symbols for mintmarks or pop culture of the day. Notice the "medal" orientation - both sides are oriented the same direction, unlike most coins! Zeus' legs are crossed, following the rule that if the tetradrachm was minted in Alexander's lifetime, or afterwards for years as was continued as a practice, then Zeus' legs are uncrossed; and crossed if the coin was "posthumous," just after Alexander's lifetime. Fortunately, NGC authentication and grading pinpointed where and when this is from. This Macedonian Kingdom series representative coin is heavy and thick with silver, so it is encapsulated in one of NGC's extra-thick "slabs." We welcome your consideration to acquire this as a prominent addition to your coin or artifact collection.
