Description: This relatively uncommon, free-franked, GUNJIYUBIN(Japanese cachet in red ink) cover(w/short letter likely w/a New Year's greeting; pretty clean, but the envelope has a large tear in it(at the back) caused when the mail was first opened, and the back flap is 55-60% intact) was sent by a Japanese soldier from Tientsin, China(then occupied by the Japanese and various, European powers), to Niigata Prefecture, Japan, on January 23, 1906! The Boxer Rebellion had been put down about 5 years prior, and the soldier was part of the occupying force there in the Chinese city, specifically charged with protecting Japanese government offices and business interests! The CDS from the Imperial Japanese Post Office in Tientsin is quite superb! The mail arrived in Niigata, Japan, on February 3, 1906, and received a great CDS! Noted imperfections aside, this remains a pretty nifty piece of Chinese, and Japanese military postal history!
