Partly Printed DS: "Brown & Clay" for plaintiff, 1p, 8x6½. Fayette County, Kentucky, 179_. In part: "Robert Russell complains of William Creath in custody, &c for this, to wit, that the said defendant...at the parish of Kentucky, and county aforesaid, with force and arms, &c. on him, the said plaintiff, did make an assault, and him the said plaintiff, then and there did beat, wound and otherwise ill treat, so that his life was greatly despaired of;...and to the damage of the said plaintiff, One thousand pounds, and thereof he brings suit...." Clay, admitted to the bar in 1797 at the age of 20, began practicing law in Lexington, Kentucky. He represented his state in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and was Speaker of the House and one of the Commissioners who negotiated the end of the War of 1812, signing the Treaty of Ghent. Clay served as John Quincy Adams' Secretary of State and ran unsuccessfully for President in 1824, 1832 and 1844. Folds, not at signature. Irregular right and lower edges.
