Like most of Twain’s book’s published in the 19th century, this book is profusely illustrated with 328 illustrations; over 30 full-page wood-engravings, as well as nearly 300 in-text vignettes (including, as the title page states, "three or four pictures made by the author of this book without outside help"). The illustrations comprise an integral part of the book’s humor. From Wikipedia: A Tramp Abroad is a work of non-fiction travel literature by American author Mark Twain, published in 1880. The book details a journey by the author, with his friend Harris (a character created for the book, and based on his closest friend, Joseph Twichell), through central and southern Europe. While the stated goal of the journey is to walk most of the way, the men find themselves using other forms of transport as they traverse the continent. The book is often thought to be an unofficial sequel to an earlier Twain travel book, The Innocents Abroad.As the two men make their way through Germany, the Alps, and Italy, they encounter situations made all the more humorous by their reactions to them. The narrator (Twain) plays the part of the American tourist of the time, believing that he understands all that he sees, but in reality understanding none of it. The book haas been rebound and recased into its original cover. The cloth hardcover is mildly soiled, but has been cleaned and is in very good condition overall. The spine and board corners have been repaired. The major cosmetic flaw is the tear in the spine which has been stabilized and repaired, but is still visible. The hinges have been reinforced with new paper, but the original endpapers were retained. The interior is excellent with no major marks, underlining, tears or odor. The paper is slightly toned with age—but much less than usual for this issue. The hinges and binding are excellent with no loose or missing illustrations or pages. It is difficult to find this book in better condition or to find one that looks as attractive on the shelf without paying much more money. All the original materials which show (and some which don’t) have been used to restore this book at great cost in time and labor.
