Chichén Itzá is an ancient Mayan city located between Valladolid and Mérida in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. Chichén Itzá was probably the main religious center of the Yucatán in the tenth century and remains today one of the most important and visited archaeological sites in the region. The site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, and on July 7, 2007, was elected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World after a controversial vote organized by the New Seven Wonders Foundation. The presence of a Mayan city at this place is due to the presence of at least five natural wells (cenotes)2 which constituted an invaluable treasure in this region deprived of water. The site owes its name to this underground water source: Chi means "mouth" and Chén, "well".3 Itzá ("water sorcerer" in Yucatecan Maya) is the name of the group that, according to ethnohistorical sources, constituted the city's ruling class. In more than one respect, Chichen Itza remains an enigma: its chronology, straddling the Late Classic and Early Postclassic periods, remains unclear; the identity of the Itzá is uncertain; and, above all, the exact nature of the undeniable links between the Maya city and central Mexico is still a matter of debate.
