Mementos Series #6

Description: Small, original, hand-pulled monotype. Suitable for framing! Artist's statement: Several years ago, I took a big trip. Lured by the history and adventure of the Silk Road, I traveled solo to China and Vietnam. I researched for years, studying, planning and dreaming and I saved enough money to be away for four months. I sketched and took photos, and since returning, have made art based on my trip. I have now been back for longer than I spent preparing for and making the journey, yet the images I made while there stay with me, my trip photos are still the basis for basically all the art I do. As memory of the trip fades, the same images keep circling back through my awareness. "Mementos" is a collection of work comprised of recent interpretations of my trip photos, as well as composites of previous iterations. I keep coming back to the same vistas, the same memories of the trip. As I continue to work with these photos, I find new ways of approaching the same subject, and as I contemplate the work, I revisit and reinterpret my own memories of the trip. It?s interesting to watch how the work changes, how my memories fade and the two blend together. Eventually, I imagine my first-hand memories will eventually be replaced by these images that keep coming back through my work, eventually the memory of the trip will only really be memories of the work I made as a result of the trip. Rather than being a strict photographic record of the (continually fading, continually receding) trip, this work is meant to share a bit of the experience of travel, a bit of the experience of being there. Or perhaps a bit of the experience of being in my brain as I manipulate these photos to illustrate my memories of the trip.
