The most northerly of all leopard subspecies, this distinctive cat once ranged widely through northeastern Asia. The few dozen Amur leopards now thought to remain in the wild are confined to southeastern Russia and possibly North Korea.This leopard is a powerful cat and an agile climber. Its Asian habitat, now severely limited, differs from that of the familiar African or Indian leopard, and is not unlike the wooded areas of New England – with maples, oaks and pines, and heavy snowfalls in winter. Due to this colder climate, the Amur has a much denser fur than other leopards, richly accentuated with thickly bordered rosettes. The cat’s decline has been the result of years of poaching and, more recently, encroachment by loggers.
