If you are not familiar with them, they are threaded onto the studs until making contact with the wheel or drum; light taps from a non-ferrous (copper, brass, wood or dead blow) hammer along the radius of the wheel will dislodge a rusted or seized wheel from the axle or brake backup flange. I'm guessing these were intended for pre-WWII automobiles and/or trucks. Lots of different thread patterns (assume all are SAE but I have not measured them) and lengths.
