President William H. Taft Signed Supreme Court Letter 10th Chief Justice U.S.

Description: William Howard Taft [1857 1930] was the 27th president of the United States, serving from 1909 to 1913, and then as the tenth Chief justice of the United States Supreme Court, serving from 1921 until his death in 1930. Taft was the only person to have held both offices. Listed for auction is a [TLS] typed letter signed by William Howard Taft. The letter is on the letterhead of the Supreme Court of the United States, Washington D.C. The letter is dated December 11, 1922, address to a Dr. Maurice Francis Egan and reads as follows, I have your December 8th, and thank you very much for sending me the ''Life of Cardinal Gibbons', which I hope to be able to read with pleasure. I cannot, however, agree to write the review of it, for the reason that my time is so taken up with my judicial duties that I cannot do work of this kind. The letter is signed ''Wm H. Taft'' and he added by hand ''With best wishes'' in black fountain pen. The letter measures 8.00 x 6.00 inches, other than expected mail folds it is in fine condition and will also be accompanied with its original transmittal envelope.
