Description: Queen Elizabeth II 1935 Princess Gift Book Print Sylvia Salisbury Illustration Historic Royal Memorabilia from Saturday's Toys presents... a single-page; full color book illustration provided for Princess Elizabeth of York (later to be crowned as Queen Elizabeth II). Elizabeth II was born in 1926 and died in 2022. As originally included within "The Princess Elizabeth Gift Book" (to raise funds for The Princess Elizabeth of York Hospital for Children). Published in 1935; plate neatly removed from book and preserved as offered. Caption for this specific offering reads: "Princess Jane of London Town - The fairy-tale princess has got a palace shining white, With a lovely marble ballroom where she dances all the night." (Pictured by Sylvia Salisbury).Information on Sylvia Salisbury is quite limited; but the inclusion of art by Frank Salisbury (1874 - 1962) within the same project project, indicates that quite possibly, Sylvia is the daughter of that artist. Francis Owen Salisbury was one of the most popular portrait artists of his day and it seems reasonable that a daughter of this respected painter might be involved as well. 7" x 9.75"; good condition with some wear from use and long-term storage; as originally published to benefit the Princess Elizabeth Hospital for Children. While the cornerstone of Princess Elizabeth's Hospital for Children was dedicated by the Queen Mother in 1934, the building would be nearly destroyed by fire in 1936. Though work immediately commenced in reconstruction of the hospital, the added disruption caused by World War II meant that the hospital would not open as originally intended until it was dedicated by Princess Elizabeth herself in July of 1948. It would later serve as a military hospital and later provided care for mentally handicapped patients, eventually closing in 1998 and falling into ruin. The land has since been sold to a developer and the site is known today as Banstead Wood Estate (accessed at Elizabeth Drive off Holly Lane in Banstead, Surrey), a luxury housing community of one, two and three bedroom apartment homes. Several of the original buildings were preserved and now serve the residents of Banstead Wood Estate. In this glimpse of the spectacular countryside of Banstead Wood (now including a popular hiking trail), it's easy to understand why this land was chosen as the site where Princess Elizabeth was honored in the naming of a hospital that shared these grounds for a half century. A beautiful tribute to a Queen whose reign outlasted even the buildings once dedicated in her name.Nicely preserved; suitable for framing. An elegant appointment for any classic interior design.
