Description: Reminiscences of Scottish Life and Character by E.B. Ramsay, M.A., LL.D., F.R.S.E., Dean of Edinburgh. Published by Ticknor & Fields, Boston, 1861. Hardcover, 297 pages plus a multi-page list of Ticknor & Fields' other publications. This is an early printing of Ramsay's work, which was first published in 1857. The text of this American issue is taken from the 7th Edinburgh edition. This copy is in nice condition. The covers are well preserved. The gilt on the spine has faded. There is a small tear on the inside of the front cover (shown in photo), which does not affect any of the text. There is occasional foxing but, by and large, the pages are clean. The original owner's name is written in pen on the second front endpaper: "Susie Shaw Nov. 22d 1861" (shown in photo). The contemporaneous inscription confirms that this copy was printed during the year of publication cited on the title page. There are no bookplates and no other pen/pencil notations. Edward Bannerman Ramsay, FRSE (1793 – 1872), usually referred to as Dean Ramsay, was a clergyman of the Scottish Episcopal Church. Reminiscences of Scottish Life and Character is his contribution to literature; at his death, it had gone through 22 editions. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
