Rare 1902 $10 National Currency Bill – Topeka KS Charter #3909 W Blue Seal

Description: This is an excellent piece of U.S. financial history: a 1902 $10 National Currency Bill issued by the Merchants National Bank of Topeka, Kansas (Charter #3909). This large-size blue seal note is a rare and desirable collectible, representing a key era in U.S. banking and currency. This $10 bill was printed in 1908 and is in good condition for its age of 116 years. It is semi-crisp and shows very little foxing across both its faces. Some pinholes appear across the bill that are not from wear but may be from some acute incident during its life. Otherwise, the bill is undamaged. It’s marked with the Merchants National Bank of Topeka Kansas (Charter #3909) stamp and blue seal. It’s larger than standard currency, measuring about 7.5” wide and 3” tall. The Merchants National Bank of Topeka, Kansas, was established in the late 19th century and operated under federal charter #3909. Founded during economic growth in the Midwest, the bank played a significant role in supporting local commerce, agriculture, and the development of Topeka as a key city in Kansas. Like many National Banks of its era, it issued its currency backed by U.S. government bonds, allowing it to serve as a vital financial institution in the region. National Bank Notes like this were introduced as part of the National Banking Act of 1863 to create a more unified and stable currency system across the United States. The 1902 Blue Seal notes, in particular, represent one of the final chapters of National Bank-issued currency before the Federal Reserve System was established in 1913. Today, surviving examples of currency from banks like the Merchants National Bank of Topeka are prized by collectors for their rarity and connection to American financial history. In 1969, the bank constructed a new 16-story building for $5,545,079 and moved into it on July 1 of that year. This significant investment underscored the bank's commitment to growth and its role in the economic development of Topeka. In 1992, the Merchants National Bank of Topeka merged with The First National Bank of Portsmouth. This merger marked the end of its independent operations but its legacy continues to be remembered in the region's banking history.
