Description: This is a fascinating collection of (2) RARE Vintage Old Mid Century L.A. TIKI Bar Polynesian Advertising Signs, one being a cast-stone Tahitian inspired Tiki, and the other being a painted wooden bar sign for "Val Moore's Polynesian Kula." Both of these items were acquired from an old collection, and the story is that they were pulled from a defunct Los Angeles Tiki Bar in the 1970's, which had been active since the late 1940's. These items likely date to the 1950's - early 1960's. The cast-stone tiki appears to have been mounted on a wooden post at one point, when looking at the base, and was likely an outdoor display. The wooden sign for the "Polynesian Kula" was possibly an indoor sign behind the bar, but I am not sure. I could not find any information on Val Moore, but a Kula is an old-time Tiki Bar drink, made famous by Don the Beachcomber's Sumatran Kula, which consists of Rum, honey syrup, grapefruit juice, orange juice, and lime juice. The cast-stone tiki is approximately 16 1/2 inches tall x 11 inches wide x 10 inches deep. The double-sided wooden sign is approximately 23 1/2 inches wide x 5 1/2 inches tall x 3/4 inches thick. The tiki is in good shape for age, exposure to the elements, and outdoor display use, with some surface grime, scuffing, and a fine and shallow surface crack down its left side, which is stable and does not affect the integrity of the piece. The wooden sign is in overall good condition, with some weathering, paint loss and paint flaking to the verso. This is probably the side of the sign that was exposed to the elements. Priced to Sell. Due to the multiple packages, and heavy weight of the items, S&H costs will be unavoidably high. However, Free Local Pickup from Los Angeles County, California is also an option. About the Sumatran Kula: Tiki Cocktails: The Sumatra Kula Oh yes, we had to buy the tiki mug. But more on that below, letβs get to the drink first. The Sumatra Kula is a tiki drink from Don The Beachcomber, who along with βTrader Vicβ Bergeron led the tiki craze in the 30βs, 40βs and 50βs. If I can summarize, Don was the Socal guy, Vic was the Norcal guy. Both liked rum and created lots of tiki drinks. Vic had the Mai Tai, Don had the Zombie. Both created chains of bar / restaurants in very un-tropical places- most, but not all, are gone now. But tiki is coming back and many of Don and Vicsβs drinks are coming back as well, and we think that is great news.As for the Sumatra Kula, this is supposedly one of Don the Beachcomberβs first tiki creations from the 1930βs. And as it was early in his career, the recipe is still very simple. But this is a tasty drink and has the added bonus of using ingredients that are easily available. The Sumatra Kula combines lime, orange, grapefruit, honey syrup, light rum and crushed ice. The honey syrup is a 1-to-1 mixture of honey and water, heat until the honey dissolves, thus making it easier to mix in drinks. And in this drink the honey is the key, surprise ingredient. It is sweet, but clearly not sugar, and brings that mystery to the drink. The other thing you will notice is the use of just light rum, as tiki drinks evolved multiple types of rum were used for extra complexity. As it is, the light rum lets the fruit juice shine- so this is a nice refreshing tiki drink. The Sumatra Kula:(adapted from Don the Beachcomber and Jeff Beachbum Berry)Ingredients:1/2 oz.
