He received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC in 1953, and was a practicing architect working in the Washington, DC and Riverside, California areas. He started watercolor painting in 1968 when working as an architect in Riverside, California, with the goal of improving his rendering skills. Slowly, however, he began to see the world in other than just architectural terms and became known for his watercolor renderings of historic buildings in Riverside California.
