She was in China when the 1911 Revolution abolished the empire and created the Republic of China. So right there you have plenty of flavor to have, with interactions between Iron Blood and Dragon Empery culture. But to even get to China she had to sail past South America and the Pacific Ocean, where she spent time showing off in Uruguay, Argentina and Chile. She even visited Easter Island. The day Britain declared war on Germany Emden was already at sea and immediately the next day she captured a Russian commerce ship, slapped some guns on it, and turned it into another German commerce raider by the name of SMS Cormoran which would later be the target of the first US attacks/deaths caused of WW1. Since the Germans quickly realized WW1 meant fighting Britain+France+Japan, they knew it was impossible to maintain their Pacific fleet, and decided to sail back to Europe. However, the Captain of Emden, one Karl von Müller, got permission to stay behind and operate as a one-ship commerce raiding fleet in the Indian and Pacific. And that's when the cool part begins (as if everything before hadn't been enough!). Emden was a light cruiser, after all, and Müller knew he couldn't fight the heavier British presence in the Indian Ocean head-on, so they built a fake 4th chimney, to look like the British light cruisers did. And it worked! She operated for about a month in the Indian Ocean sinking and capturing allied ships before the British figured out what was going on. Once they did, merchant ships became much more careful and raiding them was harder, so Müller, the mad man that he was, decided he'd instead to something more low profile like attacking the 6th largest city in India, setting fire to 1.300.000 liters of fuel before escaping. This caused Britain to suspend all shipping on the Bay of Bengal. Raiding further south continued until coal began running out (despite refueling in the Maldives) and eventually Müller sailed to Diego Garcia. Now you might be aware that Diego Garcia is a British colony and it would probably not enjoy seeing a German commerce raider show up, but the thing is, Diego Garcia didn't have a radio station, and it didn't know there was a war on! So Emden was warmly received as a break from monotony, and spent almost 2 weeks in Diego Garcia refueling, resupplying, and cleaning up the hull, before departing for another round of raiding. By this time it was October (remember the war started in early August) and Müller reasons he needs to move before his luck runs out, so he sails to the coast of Malaya, and decides to strike at Penang. There he finds a Russian cruiser, one of the few survivors of Tsushima, and promptly sinks it, just before sinking a French destroyer. The allies, in panic, once again suspend planned shipping lanes in the area. However, Emden's luck was finally running out. Müller wanted to attack a British coaling station in the Cocos Islands next. The Islands were undefended and Emden's shore raiding party managed to take out the wireless station and even cut undersea cables, but the garrison had time to send out a distress signal. That was, in turn, heard by Australian cruiser HMAS Sydney, also a light cruiser, but with better armament. The resulting Battle of the Cocos would be a pretty devastating defeat for Emden, sunk with the loss of most of her crew, and capture of the survivors and Müller. And that was the end of the adventure of the crew of SMS Emden. Or was it?The 50 members of the shore raiding party actually managed to escape the island, before the Sydney finished Emden, by taking the sail ship Ayesha. It was damaged beyond repair, the wood was rotten, and the water tanks were contaminated, but it was better than surrender. They sailed in that death trap, evading british forces, for over a month until they finally found a German merchant ship, which took them to Yemen. From there, they traveled overland to Istanbul, where they finally found an officer to report to. They would then travel the rest of the journey back to Germany, finishing an amazing round-the-world trip. These sailors were able to report in first person that the Emden, in it's 3 month career of commerce raiding in the Indian Ocean managed to travel 30.000 nautical miles, "sinking or capturing sixteen British steamers and one Russian merchant ship, totaling 70,825 gross register tons. Another four British ships were captured and released, and one British and one Greek ship were used as colliers" (quoting wikipedia here). This, of course, besides the damage caused on raids on Madras and Penang. + ~GREAT FOR COLLECTORS OR LOCAL PRESERVATION~+~100% POSITIVE FEEDBACK~+~WORLDWIDE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING~+~FAST SHIPPING~+~SHORT HANDLING TIME~+~EXPERIENCED IN PACKAGING~ +~60 DAYS FOR RETURN & REFUND IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND~+~SUPERIOR CUSTOMER SUPPORT FROM MYSELF AND EBAY SUPPORT/GUARANTEED POLICIES~+~I CARE ABOUT EACH OF MY CUSTOMERS!
