Soldiers' Allotments/3rd ME Reg., Augusta, ME--Treas. of Gardiner, ME/Sc.#65/'63

Description: This is a nifty, Civil War cover(w/ some minor stains on either side, and a back flap that's around 100% intact) sent in a long envelope on January 29, 1863, from Augusta(a pretty great, double-circle, CDS!), Maine, to the Treasurer of Gardiner, Maine! The contents(no longer present) of the mail(and fascinating, historical information on the front; names of soldiers and family to whom money should be sent) concern the soldiers' allotments(written in red ink; 13th disbursement of the war) of the 3rd Maine Regiment! On December 24, 1861, the U.S. Congress passed a bill establishing an Allotment Commission that would manage a program that dispersed 1/3 of participating soldiers' salaries to designated family members. As for the Scott #65, outside of 4-5, shorter perfs at its top, it is in very fine condition! Simply put, this is a really neat cover that sheds light on the little-known, Allotment Commission, and the soldiers and family members connected to their work!
