Description: This auction is for a stunning 19th century Dr Wall period Worchester inspired Samson of Paris, French hand painted porcelain portrait vase. This great find was purchased from a prominent Washington D.C. estate. This fine porcelain vase has a traditional 18th century English form but was made by Samson who were a French company who made copies of traditional porcelain items. This amazing example was painstakingly decorated in the Chinoiserie taste, boasting six wonderful hand painted portraits. The opposing sides depict birds in a natural setting, surrounded by flowers and foliage. These portraits are separated by a pair of lush floral portraits, framed by gilt scrolls and leaves. These portraits are surrounded by a rich texture painted cobalt ground with a plethora of gilt floral and scroll articulations. This superb vase measures approx. 7 1/4" tall with very generous proportions. It is a very heavy vase for its size. This piece is unsigned as most Samson pieces are. This piece dates to the 1880's. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. It does have some glaze wear around the base of the rim area, as if it had an oversized lid at some point. By the way the vase is made, with a decorated rim, I find it hard to believe that it was covered from the Samson factory. None the less, a truly a stunning piece indeed!
