Description: In 1892, Ward McAllister published a list of New York City’s high society called “The Four Hundred.” McAllister held out that there were only four hundred “interesting” people in the city. The list, topped by Caroline Astor, was maintained and updated through the years. In 1906, humorist and author O. Henry published The Four Million, a collection of short stories representing the lives of some of the four million Manhattanites — all of whom, the author maintained, were worthy of attention and consideration. The Four Million marked the first appearance of The Gift of the Magi, a classic of the literature of Christmas. It also features The Cop and the Anthem, the well-known story of a homeless gothamite desperate to get arrested and imprisoned before the weather turns cold. This copy is a 1917 Doubleday printing in good used condition. There is no dust jacket. The exterior shows moderate wear for its age including significant edge wear, rounded corners, and several places where the cloth has worn through. The exterior spine shows sun-fading.
