Description: The Time for Decision By Sumner Welles (1892-1961) Harper & Brothers, Publishers New York 1944 No Book Club markings whatsoever, but laid in is the quite scarce four-page reprint from the July [1944] Book-of-the-Month Club News of Henry Seidel Canby's review of The Time for Decision, the review printed in this format "In accordance with a suggestion made by a number of our subscribers . . . so that it can be pasted, if desired, to the flyleaf of the book." As noted, this four-page reprint has been laid in rather than pasted to the flyleaf and is in Fine Condition. Printed on the Colophon: "This book is complete and unabridged in contents, and is manufactured in strict conformity with Government regulations for saving paper" vii, [3], 431, [3] p.: one folded map, entitled: "Proposal for Post-War Germany"; 21.5 cm. (8.5 inches). Blue patterned cloth, with gilt-stamped spine title. No dust jacket. Includes Appendix, Index, and Printing Information (including "Manufactured by H. Wolff" and "Published by Harper & Brothers"). Probably Book of the Month Club Edition "This book, for all its courteous and diplomatic language, is more than informative, it is a criticism of the foreign policy of our State Department and of the peace policy of the United Nations. And now that we are to have in Washington a conference of the Allies with peace aims as the subject, Mr. Welles' eloquent summary of all the complex factors involved will be of the greatest value to American readers. He believes that the formulation of peace plans has been almost fatally delayed. Vagueness, if not disunity, has characterized the statements of the leaders. The time, the last possible time for a decision which will make international co-operation after the war possible, is now" [from the review by Henry Seidel Canby laid in]. Book is in Very Good Plus Condition: complete and intact, pages bright, clean, tight, and unmarked; spine title faded and spine with light wear at both ends. As noted, the Book Club review is laid in and in Fine Condition. Folded map is in Near Fine Condition: small corner crease, not impacting the map itself.
