Description: Printed by Colomban Press, Portland, Oregon, 1953. Softcover. Written by Miles Cannon. Apparent First Edition (NAP), likely a small printing. The author's wife, Eva May Cannon, signed the book on the blank rear side of the title page. The inscription reads: 'To the G. F. Atkinsons from Eva M. Cannon.' The author passed away in 1938. His wife writes 'To honor his memory and in appreciation of the research he did and the wit that was his, fifteen years after his passing, the manuscript, as he left it, is being printed.' The book is dedicated to Ms. Cannon 'without whose collaboration this work would not have been undertaken.' The short Preface written by the author reads: 'The Louisiana Purchase, which transferred to the United States approximately 1,000,000 miles of territory at a price of less than four cents an acre, the acquisition of California, the discovery of gold and the subsequent development of the Western States have been themes of abiding interest to me. During my travels over the country, covering a stretch of fifty-eight years, I have searched out many pioneers who were connected directly or indirectly with events of the emigration period which should be preserved for posterity. A few of these events are incorporated in this volume.'
