Description: Ulysses by James Joyce, Arion Press, San Francisco, 1988. DESCRIPTION: Large quarto, 12 3/4" x 9 3/4 " (33 x 24 cm), 835 pages with 40 etchings by Robert Motherwell on twenty folded leaves, some with color backgrounds. Printed letterpress with a Miller cylinder press, text is 18-point Perpetua type on French mould-made Johannot paper from 75% cotton fiber and 25% esparto fiber in two weights: 100 grams for the text pages, 240 grams for the etchings. Binding was done in-house (hand-sewn) with hand-sewn white linen headbands, white alum-tawed pigskin on the spine and fore-edges and sides of fine blue silk cloth with white flecks, spine titling in bold blue letters.The slipcase is covered with the same cloth fabric as the book with a white paper spine label. One of 150 numbered copies offered for sale with 25 Roman numeral hors de commerce copies. Signed by Robert Motherwell in the colophon. Prospectus included. CONDITION: Both book and slipcase are in very fine condition. No writing, ex-libris / bookplates, etc. No condition issues whatsoever. DISCUSSION: This is a landmark edition of James Joyce's 'Ulysses', representing one of the high points amongst the Andrew Hoyem Arion Press bibliography. In 1983, knowing that Robert Motherwell considered James Joyce his favorite author, Hoyem approached him regarding the possibility of illustrating this edition and Motherwell accepted the commission. This edition was four years in planning and a year and a half in production. Note that over the years many copies have developed darkening and/or foxing ("spotting") of the white alum-tawed pigskin spine, defects entirely absent in this copy. Copies with the white pigskin still in fine condition are extremely rare. Please examine the photographs carefully and ask all questions prior to purchase as sale is final.
