Here’s an unusual antique gouging / wood-turning chisel, with 5/8 inch blade. Overall length is 13 inches. Wood handle is 10 inches and has a brass tang. The long two-humped hard wood handle has an unusual look, and is turned on a lathe with decorative lines. The maker's name is half covered up by the tang. Through deduction on thegraragejournal, it was judged to be either NEWBOULD (Sheffield England) or Newbegin made in the mid to late 1800's, in Maine. Either way you're looking at a high quality steel mid 1800's chisel / turning gouge.The handle has an apparent stress crack that seems stable. This could be addressed or left as-is. It is still functional and the crack seems stable and has been there a long time. Would make a great piece for a display collection, or to use if you enjoy old fashioned tools.
