Description: This is a rare find! I bought this at an estate sale and wasn’t sure how special it was until I got it home and started to research. This is a special print of “Obata’s Black Horse”. It is a woodblock print numbered 168/169, printed on special rice paper marked Uchida. There is a card on the back of the print showing more details about this piece of art. Please see the photographs. Chiura Obata (1886-1975) was a Japanese born artist who later moved to California and became a U.C. Berkeley professor. This woodblock print of his horse shows a horse leaping in fluid motion. It measures approximately 17“ x 21“. When I bought it, it was framed and when I took the frame off, I was able to see how special the paper is and the print on the paper in Japanese is translated to: “reproduction prohibited, Uchida edition”. This print is signed by the artist and stamped with the Uchida seal. I believe it most likely dates somewhere between 1950’s and the late 1960s. It is in excellent condition! I have put it back in its frame and can ship it either framed or unframed. Ships from an non-smoking home.
