Description: Today I have up for consideration a Beautiful Vintage Hand Painted Japanese Fruit - Dessert Bowl. This piece is 1-1/8" tall & 5-1/8" in diameter at the rim. . This piece has a White background with a Japanese village Design. The History of the Fine China Company Back-stamps that use the terms "Fine China Japan" together with rather general words like "Delux" are not Brand name China companies, they are "Secondary" companies. Secondary back-stamps are those used for the purpose of exporting, marketing & retail distribution rather than for the purpose of identifying a maker. The maker in these cases did not want to be identified either because there was no kudos in their own name (too small & unheard of) or they were too recognizable (Noritake). Noritake alone used over 400 different Back-stamps, only some of them are obviously attributable to them. So, unlike European back-stamps, particularly UK marks, Japanese back-stamps of the 20th Century are not placed on the wares in order to identify the maker & are factors of export, marketing & distribution. The big picture in Japan's secondary back-stamping is this: there were many hundred china decorating firms active in the early to middle of the 20th century. These profusions of small makers were putting many different & varied marks on exactly the same wares, again for sales & marketing reasons known only to themselves & their agents of sales & distribution.
