Description: This is a lovely and vividly rendered Vintage Old Oklahoma Impressionist Landscape Oil Painting on Canvas, by Mid 20th century Oklahoma plein air painter, Ruth Lebow (1932 - 2023.) This artwork depicts a snow covered plain, with rocky hills, a small ice-covered pond, and tall mountain peaks in the far distance. Lebow uses expressive palette knife brush strokes, and a wide range of colorful hues to portray a beautiful and captivating image of the natural world. Signed: "Ruth Lebow" in the lower right corner. Additionally, an original artist's label affixed to the verso reads: "Paintings by Ruth Lebow. Tulsa, Oklahoma." This artwork likely dates to the late 1960's. Approximately 27 x 37 1/4 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 20 x 30 inches. Good condition for age, with some mild spots of soiling and dirtiness to the cloth inner frame (please see photos.) Acquired from an old collection in Los Angeles County, California. While Ruth’s work was traditional, Dave’s paintings are more powerful, exploring themes of uncanny and magical happenings, including dream imagery and meditations on loss. Dave, now residing in Los Angeles, has had exhibits at the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe and the Halle Saint Pierre Museum in Paris. Before there was anything that we called an “Arts District” in Tulsa, there was a group of artists who dreamed about someday hanging out in a café/bar called the Café Kunst or La Boheme and having affordable studio spaces and galleries nearby to work like mad-dog artists by day and drink like mad-fishes at night.Well, Dave Lebow and I were part of that group in the mid-1980s in Tulsa. Lebow is the son of artist Ruth Lebow, who taught Dave much about painting in oils. By the time I met him, Dave had already moved to Los Angeles and studied with Harry Carmean and Glenn Vilppu. He got sober, and after that he moved to the Art Students League in New York, where he studied with Burton Silverman. He worked in animation from 2000-09, but since then has dedicated himself to representational painting in a more expressive, imaginative and even surreal nature.In his artist’s statement, Lebow says he “explores themes of uncanny and magical happenings, including dream imagery and meditations on loss.” But, the show is full of voluptuous women, very well painted in a post-Impressionistic style with a rough, not-too-finished look. And his subject matter has an attitude that some might call the male gaze. But Lebow says it’s just how he looks at women as a dominant force, and it’s up to the viewer to interpret!But, not so fast! His women are definitely sexy, but also mighty, sometimes thoughtful, sometimes strippers and sometimes even spiritual, as seen in the painting called “Out of the Mist.” And isn’t this what real women are like — a mesh of it all! Some of the works, like “Evil Tree,” allude to telling us only part of a story, and then allowing the viewer to fill in the blanks and build the remainder of it for themselves.When Lebow’s work creates these “art detective” scenes, I feel they are the most interesting. It’s as if we are looking at modern-day mythologies of ancient Greek gods taking the form of trees or animal shapes as they attack the women, or when his work shows the Roman Emperor Nero laughing while Rome burns in the background. Only now, it’s an alluring modern woman laughing as New York City burns (Eris, Goddess of Chaos). Is she a devil or is she a saint? You will have to go see his work and decide for yourself.His work is on view, along with some of his mother’s works, at the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art through Nov. 21 in an exhibit titled “The Shrine of the Feminine.”
