Description: This 9" x 7" vintage icon of "Mary and Child" set on a scalloped/beveled mirror dates to the 1930's (approximate date) and came from Ukraine. I received this from a friend whose parents immigrated to the states in the late 50's and settled in Ohio. This icon was one of the few items that belonged to his grandmother brought over by his mother. This makes the date hard to approximate. The icon shows some aging by the areas on the reflective mirror along the edging that has lost its shine. I tried to show this in the pictures. There are a few pics that seem redundant but I angled the camera hoping to deflect some of the reflections from the light. On the back of the icon the nut is a little loose but I thought it would be best to not tighten it in case someone wants to remove it. Background on image: Historians can only speculate about the origins of this icon. It reflects the style of the earliest Marian portraits, including icons attributed to Saint Luke the Evangelist, which was continued through the centuries by the Byzantine iconographers. The composition and style of the icon is classically Byzantine, with its stylized folds in the Virgin's and Christ's robes, the Greek abbreviations of "Jesus Christ" and "Mother of God," and the typically Byzantine-style angels.
