Description: This vintage TIME magazine cover, dated Mar 28, 1932, features a special 11x14 beveled mat and is a must-have for any sports fan or collector. Gabby Street was a light hitting catcher (.202) for 4 teams in the early 20th century. His seven year career ended in 1912 with the New York Highlanders. He was made famous as the guy who caught a ball dropped from the top of the Washington Monument (555 feet) in 1908. He became manager for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1930 and guided them to the World Series in 1930 and 1931, finally winning that year in 7 games over the mighty Philadelphia Athletics. This original cover is from spring training time the following season and is a rare find, sure to be a valuable addition to any collection. This is one of my collection of 21 hard to fine original TIME magazine covers (not whole magazines) featuring famous baseball and football players that I acquired 15 years ago. I had been looking for over 30 years in antique shops, old book stores, and in flea markets up and down the East Coast. But while many people over the years collected LIFE magazines with sports personalities on the covers, for some reason hardly anyone kept their TIME issues. Some of these are very rare and almost 100 years old. The previous owner of this group had mounted them in mats, so they are ready for framing and adding to your own personal sports collections.
