Description: Woman with fruit basket, double-sided, relief, Franz Weiss Woman with fruit basket, double-sided, relief, Franz Weiss Franz Weiss (1903 - 1981) Franz Weiß (* 5 May 1903 in Munich; † 1 June 1981 in Kempten (Allgäu)) was a painter who made a name for himself especially in the Allgäu and Munich. In addition to his work as a painter, he was also active as a facade and interior designer, designing sculptural decorations and advertising graphics. After his studies and first works in Munich, Franz Weiß moved to Kempten in 1923, but kept a studio in Munich for a long time. From 1939 to 1944 he participated in the Great German Art Exhibition with seven oil paintings. He sold these works for 6,000 to 10,000 Reichsmarks each, including to prominent National Socialists such as Adolf Hitler, Hermann Esser and Hermann Giesler. In the late 1940s, Weiß designed a label for the Allgäu brewery showing a typical Allgäu boy in lederhosen carrying beer home in a steinkrug. This label has embossed the Allgäuer Büble brand since 1950 and can still be seen today on beer mats, posters and restaurant signs of the brewery. From the end of the 1940s, he also designed posters for the Allgäu Festival Week. Franz Weiß shaped the cityscape of Kempten and other cities such as Bad Wörishofen and Füssen with his facade paintings. In Kempten, many of his works are still visible on various houses, including new buildings in Bahnhofstraße, Hildegardplatz, Gerberstraße, Bäckerstraße and Schumacherring. His notable works include the painting of the Seven Swabians on the Swabian Path and the portrait of Heinrich von Kempten at Kempten City Hall. In the Lindenberg School, he designed the atrium with scenes from Roman Cempten and he also painted the Müßgengelzunfthaus. In 1954 he was involved in the interior renovation and redesign of the Kempten City Theatre, including the elaborate ceiling rosette and the painting over of the theatre curtain with the Dance of the Muses by Franz Sales Lochbihler. The granary hall was also designed by him. In addition to Kempten, he also worked in Munich, Wangen, Füssen, Immenstadt and Bad Wörishofen. Franz Weiß died in 1981 in Kempten. Until shortly before his death, he was artistically active and trained many apprentices who themselves worked in art or as restorers, including the painter and cartoonist Manfred Küchle.
