Description: Here is a WW1 grouping of a soldier who wore both a German and French uniform! Very Rare!!Here is a grouping of a soldier consisting of a German pay-book, a picture and a German Medal of the Great War. I have done quite a This soldier’s name is Johann Meyer, who was born on the 27th of August, 1893 in Anzelingen (actually Anzeling) a district of Bolchen (actually Boulay) in the Lorraine region. After the defeat of France in 1871 to Germany, France lost two regions Alsace and Lorraine, which became part of Germany. After November 11th 1918, these two regions would become part of France again-only to become part of Germany from 1940 to 1945. Since 1945, both regions are again part of France!Johann Meyer became incorporated into the German Army the 16th of October, 1912 in an artillery regiment. During the Battle of Othain (just North of Verdun in the Meuse-Argonne area) he was wounded the 1st of September, 1914 in his Left shoulder by a piece of shrapnel (Something I found out thanks to the Archives)I translated the paybook. On page 8 and 9, I discovered that after his wounds healed, he took care of horses in his camp. His conduct, though, was less than desireable. He was sentenced to 7 days in prison, as he deserted just before Christmas and then returned a few days later. His sentence was announced by Major General von Brinsewitz. The paybook was then signed by the General. He fulfilled his penalty from the 24th of February to the 2nd of March, 1916.He returned to his village the 26th of March, 1919, and French authorities stamped his (pay)bookHis French Military file shows that he served for 4 years in the 34th Artillery of the German Army. His name Johanne became Jean. After the First World War, he did his French military obligation in the 61st Artillery Regiment and then received his French nationality. He received a pension for his shoulder wound. He married afterwards and had two children. In 1939, he was requisitioned into the French Army to guard a factory. Johann Meyer died in 1947. There were only a couple of thousand German soldiers who were originally from Alsace, and then fought in the French Army. It is really difficult to find a grouping like this many documents in the archives, as most documents were burned in 1944.I added to the grouping his French military file a copy of his ancient combatant file, a picture of his tomb, a copy of his birth certificate in German which has his date of death in French along with the translation of pages 8 and 9.We can typically find German paybooks for sale, but never with this much information!
